Feminists in New York
One of my favorite Instagram/Facebook accounts is called HONY or Humans of New York. This project was created by Brandon Stanton in 2010 in which he photographs people and includes a quote from them alongside the photo. Seven years later and Brandon has taken his project overseas to countries in the Middle East and in South America, to capture stories felt all around the world. Personally, I love learning about people’s experiences and hearing the stories they want to share with the world.
In the same sense, I’ll be recreating HONY but calling it FONY or Feminists of New York. In my project, I will capture pictures of women from different cultures and backgrounds, with different mindsets and different lifestyles and ask them a simple question: “Why are you a feminist?” To follow up with that, I will ask “When was the first time you’ve recognized your resonance with feminist thinking?” or “When has there ever been a time where you have felt powerful by being a feminist?”. These questions can help break the ice and lead the conversation to a story or a memory that could be used as a quote.
I will showcase my work on Instagram with the username @feministinny and promote with the hashtag #FeministsInNY and #FONY. I want to make my work known and shared with the world so people can learn about other women in the world, either next door or a country over. I hope these images and the stories that come along with it teach and inspire others to be whoever they want to be in a world that tells them otherwise. This project is meant to be educational while also enlightening and relatable in a time where feminism is highly discussed in the public sphere.
For this class specifically, I hope to get at least 10 pictures for my project. After the class is over, I hope to continue updating my project and adding more pictures to the account. The good thing about this project is that I can always add to it and make it grow.
