Project Proposal

Growing up, I felt that women were often marginalized in Muslim communities. The rules were so heavily enforced on the women, and the men were often given excuses when deviating from religious teachings. I saw major disparity in how the genders were treated and it sparked questions in my mind as to how and why Islam caters to the genders in different ways. Culture can be so integrated and mixed into religion, that it’s often hard to differentiate between the two. Islam and women has been a major topic of debate in relations to feminism. The question of oppression is often raised and whether the narrative of religion seeking to upgrade the status and voice of men while silencing women is true or not. I would like to examine the  the different narratives of muslim men, women, and scholars, in local communities, and  whether certain ideologies are actually a product of the religion, or a product of male dominance and norms in cultures.

Above all else, my main goal is to clear up misconceptions, but also to bring to light the problematic ideologies that are well and alive today, where they came from, and how we can combat it. I want to interview both knowledgeable scholars, practicing muslims, and even the non-practicing people who still identify as Muslim and shed light on how they view Islam in relation to women.

  1. Hi Roba,

Your topic is so important, interesting and complex. I know she is a controversial figure, but several years ago, I read the book Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali and I think her viewpoint is at least worthy of consideration and analysis.

  2. Hey Roba,
I really like your idea because stereotypes and misconceptions hurt individuals and society in general. I was thinking how you can put that visually. Did you want to use photographs or a video format to document your project? I feel like a video with a precise cut and edit will help your topic more since it feels more personable. Maybe you can also define and identify key elements to Islam yourself in the video so it can help us comprehend easily what Islam is. Your voice is important too!

  3. Hi Roba,

I think your project will be a great way to shed light on the misconceptions surrounding Muslim women.

I've included two links that focus on how Muslim women are represented in media for you to possibly draw examples from for your project:

    Hope these help!
