Gurinder Chadha
was born in Kenya and grew up in Southall, London, England. She began her
career as a news reporter with BBC Radio, directed several documentary awards
for the BBC, and began an alliance with the British Film Institute (BFI) and
Channel Four. In 1990, Chadha set up her own production company: Umbi Films. I
have to add that she is a writer, producer, and film director.
I
like when I have to talk about authors, artist or film director/screenwriter,
regardless of whether they are women or men doing the work. For me, no matter
what the sex that is doing or creating it, what matters is the idea, the
message and the work they want to demonstrate. As a creator of content and
videos, what matters is to produce a good material, that's why I always decided
to study and be a film producer. In the year 2002 when I was 10 years old, I
grew up loving soccer and cinema. In that year appeared the film "I want
to be like Beckham" "Bend it like Beckham".
This film caught my
attention because I first talked about football and a very famous English
player like Beckham. Also, I was struck, because the main author of this film
was a woman. Long ago it was strange to see a woman playing soccer because she
was not considered female. This film created much controversy but also broke
some taboos in the history of the cinema. Since the main actress was not only
female, her origin was from India. Usually, girls who belong to Muslim custom
or tradition, are able to follow a law or rule that prohibits them from doing
certain things.
That
is why, this film directed by Gurinder Chadha and was made to go against that
stereotype, break taboos and prove that a woman was not stopped being female
for practicing a sport of men at that time.
In
the film, Gurinder shows the daily life of a woman of India. Jesminder lived in
another country with different customs. Jesminder was an 18-year-old girl
living with her Hindu family in London. Her parents want her to be the perfect
Indian wife, but she just wants to play football. She was fascinated by this
game and was attracted to a famous football star like Beckham. One day in the
park, Jules a girl of her age looks at her and invites her to join the local
women's team. Jesminder is born overnight a series of opportunities and
problems that will shake your world. He has before his eyes the opportunity to
take his team to the finals and enjoy what he really likes and gives him good
but will conflict with his family and his community so he will use various
strategies to make his wishes come true.
